Test – Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI 150 FAP Style

Skoda Octavia 4: cousin of the Golf 8, Leon 4 and A3 4

Today we are discovering the 4th generation of modern Skoda Octavia: an important car for the Czech brand since in 2019 the Octavia was its best-selling model in the world. This 4th generation Octavia shares its platform and most of its technical components with the Golf 8, but also the Seat Leon 4 and the Audi A3 4 as well. The Octavia, in the idea, it is therefore like a Golf technically, but with more room for the passengers and in less expensive. We will see if this is still the case for this generation. For engines, the range will be wide since it will go from 110 to 245 hp, with two or 4-wheel drive versions, manual or DSG gearboxes and two plug-in hybrid versions, each available in sedan or station wagon.

Skoda Octavia 4: more high-tech, more flattering, always spacious

It changes a lot inside with the most obvious to begin with: this new mini-gear lever on the DSG box versions, a lever that strangely reminds that of the Golf 8. But that’s not all: for the For the first time, a Skoda can receive, as standard or as an option, depending on the version, the head-up display. To the left of the steering wheel, there is no longer a thumb wheel for managing the lights, but buttons: as on the Golf 8, again. For its part, the central screen, here 10 inches, is entitled to new graphics and menus, such as those of air conditioning or driving aids. Facing the driver, the digital handset is not new, but it is in series from the second level of finish, becomes larger and the graphics have also evolved there. The seats can be massaged and ventilated for the first time. As for the quality of presentation, it is one of the good points of the car as well for the materials as the assemblies. The neat appearance of several chrome buttons or the marked design for example or level of the door handle pulls the whole up: this Octavia would become almost flattering. At the rear, the habitability has not changed compared to the previous generation and therefore remains in the right category average and in any case significantly higher than that of a Golf. We also appreciate the little touches, like the new special smartphone pocket or the 230 Volt socket. The trunk, announced in slight progression according to Skoda,

Skoda Octavia 4 TDI 150: no surprises behind the wheel

We saw that inside, there are a lot of new things. On the other hand, behind the wheel, in any case with this TDI 150 version, there is almost nothing that changes in driving sensations compared to the previous generation. And for good reason: it’s the same engine, the same gearbox, the same platform. We just noted a few jerks of the gearbox during downshifts in deceleration, which did not exit previously. We did not measure this version precisely but the same in station wagon which goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.3 seconds and 30.6 seconds per kilometer at a standing start. The sedan in our test should show better lap times since it is lighter. Suffice to say that there is an extension, it accelerates well, there is torque. Besides, there are 360 Nm, or a little more torque than on the manual gearbox versions (340 Nm). For the chassis part, we have a version with piloted suspensions which is comfortable: even when we put ourselves in sport mode, it’s still nice. We would like a little more dynamism but anyway the vocation of the car is to be a good, healthy, safe family: that’s what it is. And in addition there is a good surprise in terms of consumption.

Skoda Octavia 4 TDI 150: the most sober in the category!

Indeed, consumption is simply the best in the category according to our measurements with 5.3 l on average, and again our measurements having been made with the station wagon, the lighter sedan should do even better. Enough to pass less good news on the tariff side: the new Octavia rises from 1500 to 2000 € compared to its predecessor because of additional equipment. Despite this increase, our test model at 34,300 € with its TDi 150 DSG box in high-end Style finish remains cheaper than a Golf with motorization and equivalent equipment and very well placed in the family segment given the level of service. . And with the same engine and the same gearbox, you can go down to € 30,500 with a little less equipment in the Ambition finish. In short there is less and less reason to
