Test – Honda Jazz 1.5 i-MMD 109 Exclusive

Honda Jazz 2020: facing the Clio hybrid and the Yaris hybrid

It is a bet that Honda is making with its 4th generation of Jazz: a risky bet, because this new generation is a minivan, a segment which represents less than 2% of sales currently in Europe. But a coherent bet, especially because the first 3 generations of Jazz were small minivans like this one, and because it is in small cars that we need the most space, and you will see that it is rather successful. I say small car because this Jazz 4th of the name is 4.04 m long, about the same as a Clio, but 1.53 m high, 9 cm more than the French one. This Jazz is offered in France only with a hybrid engine of 109 hp composed of a 1.5 l petrol unit and two electric motors: we explain the operation a little further. In fact, there are not 36 hybrid city cars: there is the Yaris hybrid and the Clio hybrid which we will be testing very soon. But first, a little tour inside this Jazz, and you will see, it’s worth it!

Honda Jazz 2020: spacious and clever

In this interior, we begin by noting the amounts of fine windshields, Citroën C4 Space Tourer style, typical of minivans, which improve visibility from the front: nobody will complain. The dashboard is only entitled to hard plastics, but the presentation is visually successful, especially in our test model with clear inserts that make the atmosphere warmer. We appreciate the fairly numerous storage spaces scattered throughout the cabin. The front seats are supposed to be very comfortable, but we didn’t feel anything special at that level, unlike a C4 Cactus for example. Between the front seats is an airbag which is used in the event of a strong side impact so that the heads of the front passengers do not bump: extremely rare! And when it comes to security, all modern driving aids are present on our test model in high-end Exclusive finish. The rear seats are a strong point for this Jazz with excellent roominess, worthy of the higher categories, both for legroom and headroom. And that’s not all: there are also the famous “magic seats”, translate the seat which is raised to easily allow the loading of tall objects. This does not prevent the seat from folding down in the traditional way by the files also. The trunk in normal position remains at 300 dm3: on average for a city car, nothing more, but it must be said that the battery located under the trunk floor condemns this space. test in Exclusive high-end finish. The trunk in normal position remains at 300 dm3: on average for a city car, nothing more, but it must be said that the battery located under the trunk floor condemns this space. legroom as the roof guard. And that’s not all: there are also the famous “magic seats”, translate the seat which is raised to easily allow the loading of tall objects. This does not prevent the seat from folding down in the traditional way by the files also. The trunk in normal position remains at 300 dm3: on average for a city car, nothing more, but it must be said that the battery located under the trunk floor condemns this space. legroom as the roof guard.

Honda Jazz 2020: soft and comfortable

This Honda Jazz is therefore hybrid, but it has a somewhat particular functioning: it is the same as that of the CR-V i-MMD. For those who remember, it is almost exclusively an electric car and the heat engine serves as a generator to continuously power the electric motor. There are in fact 3 operating modes: either the battery is full and you can drive in 100% electric mode (you can ride on electricity alone for about 2 kilometers, hardly more); either you are in hybrid mode with the internal combustion engine which produces electricity so that the electric motor can tow the car; at certain speeds (between 80 and 120 km / h under certain load conditions), the engine can also drive the wheels directly. Where it is very strong is that we absolutely do not feel the transitions between these 3 modes. It’s very sweet. You almost have to look at the little EV light on the dashboard to know that you are electric, or not. One of the criticisms comes from the moment when you press hard on the accelerator: you hear a lot of the engine. Honda has made the effort to pretend there are gearshifts, which is not the case, but we have like an artificial gear box, we also feel that it is artificial, but we appreciate the effort, thank you Honda. This in fact avoids the usual scooter effect typical of CVT boxes. In terms of performance, this is quite sufficient: we are in 10.4 s at 0 to 100 km / h and 32 s for the kilometer of stationary start. VS’ is especially pleasant in town with 253 Nm of torque available from the start, like an electric. At low speed, it therefore revives very easily. For the rest, we appreciate the great softness of use. The car is pleasant, both for its space and its layout and to drive for its comfort side. So overall we like this new Honda Jazz.

Honda Jazz 2020: as sober as the Clio hybrid

Especially that it has the good taste to be sober: we measured 5 liters all round on average, which is as good as the Clio hybrid yet lower, and better than the previous Yaris hybrid, the new generation arriving soon. All the other city gasoline cars are much greedier. Well done to Honda, who offers here a model that is spacious, comfortable, clever, safe and particularly sober for not too expensive: our test model costs € 25,000 at the top of the range, but the hybrid Jazz starts at € 22,000. Finally if you do not like the look, there is a Jazz Crosstar, the same technically but enhanced and with external attributes of SUV, that some may find sexier. But it also costs € 2,000 more!
