Caterham Super Seven 1600: even more vintage!

Good morning all. In this release of deconfinement, today I offer you a little fresh air, something invigorating: the Caterham Super Seven 1600. From a special edition that wants to surf even more than the other models of the brand on the vintage look with the spare wheel as standard, the elongated front fenders (while usually it is a small mudguard that just surrounds the wheel), a stainless steel pot and if you lift the hood, these big air filters which would have hidden double-barrel carbs a few years ago, but which of course today hide injectors. The technical part, it is the same as that of Caterham 275, namely under the hood a 1.6 l atmospheric 4 cylinder Ford of 135 hp. Largely sufficient on paper since the machine weighs less than 600 kg.

Caterham Super Seven 1600: spartan but neat

The interior also plays the vintage card with old-fashioned chrome-rimmed counters and standard leather upholstery. On the other hand, the wooden steering wheel is optional: it is standard in leather. There are also some chrome switches but others in black plastics denote frankly. And then this warning light for seat belt not fastened bordering on anachronism … Our car has the S3 chassis, which is to say narrow, as opposed to the wider SV chassis. And in this configuration, the cabin is very narrow at the elbows while the very close crankset can lead to simultaneous pressure on the brake and the accelerator: be careful with the shoes you wear, you will quickly feel like you are in Moonboot … However, we love the ultra-short travel gear lever. And if the equipment is obviously spartan, there is still heating …

Caterham Super Seven 1600: unique sensations!

As usual, I will share with you the sound of this machine, and there is a lot of noise! For performance, Caterham announces 5 seconds for 0 to 100 km / h, almost 200 km / h in top speed, and rather incredible, it seemed to us that the v-max was reached in 4th and not in 5th , as if there was a long box: incredible on this kind of machine! Rest assured, however, it is despite this “long box”, the car never gives the impression of not having enough under the hood, of lack of torque, thanks to the very low weight. In terms of sensations, it’s simply top! There is no filter, nowhere, we are seated on the rear axle a few cm above the road. There is no assistance: no anti-skating, no ABS, no ESP, but the car is very healthy. There is something to enjoy easily and the car communicates a lot with its driver. For braking, there is no assistance so do not hesitate to press hard. The amazing part is that if you are on the track, the car brakes hard and for a long time, unlike other cars with sporting pretensions which have brakes that vanish very quickly. Again thanks to this weight, the car does not need to be set firmly in suspension to avoid almost any roll. So it’s also a surprisingly comfortable ride. In short, we love this machine, it is certainly not practical at all but it is as pleasant to look at as it is to drive. What’s amazing is that if you’re on the racetrack, the car brakes hard and for a long time, unlike other cars with sporting pretensions which have brakes that vanish very quickly. Again thanks to this weight, the car does not need to be set firmly in suspension to avoid almost any roll. So it’s also a surprisingly comfortable ride. In short, we love this machine, it is certainly not practical at all but it is as pleasant to look at as it is to drive. So it’s also a surprisingly comfortable ride. In short, we love this machine, it is certainly not practical at all but it is as pleasant to look at as it is to drive. So it’s also a surprisingly comfortable ride. In short, we love this machine, it is certainly not practical at all but it is as pleasant to look at as it is to drive.

Caterham Super Seven 1600: € 46,000 of totally irrational pleasure

Note that there is obviously no controlled suspension, but 3 suspension configurations to choose from when ordering: road, sport or track. We had the most flexible. A self-locking is also available as an option at € 1,545. Which brings us to the price: our non-optional machine costs € 46,000, or € 8,000 more than the base Caterham 275. It’s expensive for a little extra look without additional technical benefits. But anyway, such a machine is obviously not a rational purchase given the lack of equipment and practical aspects. If you can afford it, you’ll have some pretty unique driving pleasure, and you won’t see many others on the road!
